1. Standing water remains after the rain
A puddle that stays long after nearby ground has dried can point to a low area, compacted soil or a missing route for runoff. Note how long the water remains and whether the wet area is getting larger.
2. The ground stays soft or muddy
Persistent soft areas may be receiving surface runoff, underground seepage or roof water. The source matters because a French drain, catch basin and grading correction solve different problems.
3. Mulch, soil or gravel keeps washing away
Moving material reveals the direction and speed of runoff. Photographs of the wash pattern can help identify where water enters the area and where a stable outlet may be possible.
4. Downspouts empty beside the foundation
Roof runoff is concentrated water. Extending or piping downspouts to an appropriate discharge point can sometimes be an important part of the larger drainage plan.
5. Water crosses a driveway or walkway
Flow across a travel surface can carry gravel away, create slippery areas and feed potholes. The solution may require both water control and reshaping the affected surface.
6. The same area grows moss or loses grass
Vegetation changes do not diagnose the problem by themselves, but they can help show where moisture persists. Compare the area during dry weather and after a storm.
7. Water moves toward a structure
Runoff traveling toward a house, garage, retaining feature or crawlspace deserves prompt evaluation. The plan should consider slope, collection, carrying capacity and a safe discharge location.
